1th ECML (European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe) Thinking tank "Whole-school support for the language/s of schooling" took place on 13th and 14th September 2016 in Graz (Austria). 16 experts from different European countries, 3 International non-governmental organisations, a representative from the European Commission and the ECML secretariat looked in depth at one of the greatest challenges facing European school systems today - the language of schooling. The overall aim of the Thinking tank was held to present the recommendations on the kinds of activities the centre could undertake in this area within the current programme 2016 - 2019.
Riga Secondary School 34 Deputy Head Ms.D.Karhu actively participated in the plenary sessions and workgroups.
In order to come up with innovative yet feasible recommendations, the experts at the Think tank looked more closely at particular aspects of the language/s of schooling, including the rationale for a whole-school approach, strategies for its implementation, the most appropriate teaching methodologies and the practical challenges facing school communities.
On 29th September 2016 in Riga Secondary School 34 Deputy Head Ms.D.Karhu held an information seminar for a group of trainers and teachers, where they were introduced with the materials presented on the website www.ecml.at , with the results of ECML online questionnaire where 107 participants from 33 different countries (including Riga Secondary School 34 )were interviewed. The participants were informed about various ECML proposals: expanding the current ECML Training and consultancy offer, organising a joint EU-ECML event, developing an online self-assessment tool so that schools can better understand the challenges, assess their own situation and consider different solutions.
